I attended a mixer for business class on the 25thof September located in Buhl Hall. I got to speak with many people while I was there. Some include Aimee Saxon, Carly Mendez, and Catherine Grant. Aimee Saxon is a staffing manager at Accountemps Pittsburgh, Carly Mendez is a CPA human resources representative at Schneider Downs, and Catherine Grant is a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley. It was great for me to talk. To these people because I’m not one to just go up and talk to stranger, so this helped me open up a lot. For the most part I had a great time at this event.
When talking to the human resources representative from Schneider Downs we were able to talk about how the training, hiring, and evaluating happenings in the line of work. The lady from Morgan Stanley who was a financial advisor talked to me about how she suggests and renders financial services to clients. I then talked to a staffing manager from Accountemps Pittsburgh and she is responsible for recruiting, training, and retaining employees.
The article I chose to read was “Inside Google Marketing: 4 ways we’re planning for an automated future.” I chose this article because while I was reading it something caught my eye: “machines are only as good as the data we feed into them” (4 Ways to Plan).  In the article it said that when being creative they take creative from campaigns and develop questions to produce variations of ads to get key variables before testing them. One other thing I found cool in the article was “the beauty of digital marketing is how easy it is to ne contextually relevant” (4 Ways to Plan).

During our marketing section of class discussion Dr. Chung had guest speaker Dr. Michelle Price come in and teach the class. I chose to talk about Dr. Price because she really caught my attention with not letting us have our laptops or phones out. Dr. Michelle Price got her Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art & history from Ohio University in 1989. Dr. Price went to a different university to get her MFA in design at Syracuse University in 1992. She then decided to continue her education and got her Doctor of Philosophy in instruction technology from Ohio University in 2013. Before Dr. Price became an assistant professor at Ohio University, she worked at Imperial Home and Décor Group and American Greetings. She became an assistant professor  at Ohio University from 2002 to 2014. She has recently, 2018, come to Chatham as the student & community engagement coordinator.
The main concepts I have learned from her lecture was to stay off my phone during class, just kidding she actually taught me a lot. Dr. Price taught about the concepts of product, industry, product development process, and patent. According to her presentation product is something that can be marketed to customers because it provides a benefit and satisfies a need. An industry is a group of businesses that compete with one another to market products that are the same or similar. The product development process is a series of activities by which a product idea is transformed into a final product. Dr. Price said a patent is a grant of the exclusive right to produce or sell a product, process, or invention.
Each concept Dr. Michelle Price talked about was also stated in our class book. For example, Dr. Price went over industry, patent, product, and product development process. According to the book a patent “grants you the right to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling the invention in the United States for twenty years” (Flat World Knowledge). Dr. Price explanation of a product is almost the same as the book, “a product is something that can be marketed to customers because it provides them with a benefit and satisfies a need” (Flat World Knowledge). The definition of the product development process in the book is exactly what Dr. Price said in her lecture.
I chose to read the article “Inside Google Marketing: What we learned from the Pixel 3 launch” because it has marketing right in the name. The first thing that caught my attention was “data is a marketer’s best friend, especially when you’re gearing up to launch a new product” (Marketing for the Pixel 3 Launch). The article talks about how data helps create product and the development process. It also said that dreaming has become lost a little bit in the industry.

Galvanize Clothing
Mission Statement:
Our companies’ vision is to inspire, provide, accelerate, and build new ways to tell a feeling through what your wearing.
Business Environment:
My company will be competing in the clothing industry. There are a ton of clothing companies in the world, but very little that try to change the world. Through my company we will be challenging the way people express themselves. My company will better the environment by using minimum harmful products to make the clothing. We will donate $1 of each purchase to the Environmental Defense Fund. The Environmental Defense Fund is working to provide solutions for climate change, oceans, wildlife and habitats, and health (Callaghan). The clothes we will make will come straight from ideas of the people. Not many clothing companies do this, other companies go with the trends. Yes, of course we will be going with trends, but changing them to inspire others.
Entrepreneurship and Strategy:
As the chief executive officerof Galvanize I will face challenges in promoting an selling the clothing products. To be able to promote the product I will select specific locations to advertise. To sell the products we will make them appealing and affordable.
Management:
As the General Manager of Galvanize I will be planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the company. To start off the planningI will establish an overall course of action (PPT: CH05 Slide 14). I will develop the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threatsof the company. The strengthsof the company are going to be the new aspect of a clothing line with a helping fund behind it. The weakness will be starting the company up and trying to get it going.  The opportunities of the company are able to grow to the highest level. The opportunitiesconsist of building a brand that expresses feelings and using actual persons ideas. The threatsof the company would be all the other clothing companies in the world. Building the company up to be able to raise over 50,000 dollars for the Environmental Defense Fund is a major goalof Galvanize. Another goal would be to build the brand so it’s like Versace and Gucci. As the general manger I have to organize job specializations anddepartmentalization’s. Controlling is another aspect of the general manager position of Galvanize. First, I have to set standards by which performance will be measured (PPT: CH05 Slide 45). Second, I have to measure the performance of the company (PPT: CH05 Slide 45). Then, I have to compare actual performance with standards and identify any deviations (PPT: CH05 Slide 45). Next, I have to determine the reasons for the deviations (PPT: CH05 Slide 45). Finally, I will take corrective action if needed (PPT: CH05 Slide 45).  To motivate the employees of Galvanize I would include bonus plans, paid time off, and insurance. One of the most important things to managing Galvanize comes from the article Managing Oneself, “we will have to stay mentally alert and engaged during 50-year working life, which means knowing how and when to change the work we do” (Drucker). Knowing when the company needs change is a huge part of being the General Manager.
Marketing:
As the Chief Marketing Officerof Galvanize I am responsible for activities in the company. I will deal with creating, communicating, and delivering offers to customers. To promote the company, I will post ads with coupons to bring more customers to the store. The potential customers of Galvanize are people in the age range of 18 to 30. These are people who want to express themselves in a new and unique way. To target customers I will use product, price, promotion, and place. The product would consist of a unique way to make people love themselves just the way they are. The product will always have the Galvanize logo, but not always real big on it. The price of the product will vary depending on the material, but always affordable to the customer. The promotion and place of the product being promoted is crucial. Most of the people in the age range of 18 to 30 surf the web which includes Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and email. These are the four main bases where advertising the products will happen.
Accounting and Finance:
As the Chief Financial Officerof Galvanize I am a senior executive who has responsibilities of the financial affairs. To determine the company’s financial plan, I have to go through six steps. 1) Determine current financial situation. 2) Develop your financial goals. 3) Identify alternative courses of action. 4) Evaluate alternatives consider the company situation, company values, and economic factors. Then evaluate assess which are risks and time value of money. 5) Create and implement your financial action plan. 6) Review and revise the financial plan.
Balance Sheet:

Information Systems and Operations:
As the Chief Information Officerof Galvanize I am in charge of information technology. I would consider using TPS to optimize the productivity and operation efficiency of Galvanize. TPS starts with input of data from a person to a computer. Then, the transaction begins and the process in the databases. Next, the data gets outputted to invoices and monthly bills, reports and summaries of individual and collected transactions, and upload data for processing.

Individual Assignment 2

            IA02
Currently I am an undecided major, but I am looking at a major in Criminology/Psychology or Physical Therapy. Yes, I know those are two very different majors. That’s why I took classes in both areas. I also chose to interview a Crim/Psych major to further my understanding of the major, and to help me decide if that’s the area I want to major in. I interviewed Sarah Naple, nineteen years old, a sophomore here at Chatham. She is a transfer student from a college in Ohio, so she has experience with how other colleges run there crim and psych majors.  Sarah’s interest are playing varsity women’s lacrosse here at Chatham and playing club lacrosse at Intrepid Lacrosse. Outside of school Sarah’s interests are working, watching Netflix, and of course sleeping. When Sarah’s not playing lacrosse at school she likes going to athletic events with friends.
During my interview with Sarah I asked her if she had any advice for good studying strategies. Sarah came up with a lot of helpful strategies. One being a good night of sleep before the test. Another being, “read over the textbook and take notes on the text.” She also said that putting the material in your own words makes it easier to understand what is being taught. Her final piece of advice was to start studying days or weeks in advance to prepare.
Another question I had for Sarah was for advice on how to build a good portfolio/resume.  Sarah first said to build a good portfolio I should get out into my community and get involved with it. She said that going to campus events are a good was to socialize and being able to meet other people so you can network. Sarah said if you want a good internship to start looking in advance for internships in your major.
To finish off my interview I asked Sarah how meaningful projects, competitions, or activities helped her build a portfolio/resume. She answered with an experience from lacrosse. She said that “lacrosse has shaped me to be the person I am today.” Lacrosse taught Sarah how to be a leader on and off the field. She said playing the sport she loves helps here learn how to deal with people. Sarah conclude our interview with, “it is helpful to be in meaningful clubs to get involved more, and make friends for the rest of your life.”
I decided to research about someone else going to Chatham University, but this time the student is an accounting major. Rachel Kolar is a current MACC student at Chatham. Like Sarah, the person I interviewed, Rachel too plays a division III varsity sport. Rachel does not play lacrosse, she plays volleyball for the woman’s team. Rachel decided to attend Chatham because of the smaller school size, and it allows her to receive individual attention from professors. Rachel and Sarah have similar views, and one is that organization is key. Rachel planned ahead and has had many successful internships. During the interview with Sarah she said to plan ahead for internships.

Holiday Shoppers Asking for Help
People today are finding holiday shopping more overwhelming than they have in previous years. This article is mainly about how brands can assist shopper’s by navigating through this crazy shopping time. This year people are more open to looking at and trying new brands. Many shoppers are using their mobile devices for shopping help. Many brands have to keep up with their online stores so shoppers know what to buy. Another favorite tool for holiday shoppers is video. Many shoppers use the videos as inspiration on what to buy and who to buy it for. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are no longer the top dogs because shoppers are buying on any day and every day, even when there isn’t a sale going on. If you’re a retailer with returning customers it’s good to remember important stuff like there past sizes and items they’ve purchased. Don’t let the holidays be a headache for your shoppers. Build long term loyalty with your customer and business growth.
The concept of making sure you know what the buyer needs is related to the book because the book says you need to have a marketing plan, strategies, and good employees. All of those will bring in more customers new and existing customers. Customers like to see the workplace being run neatly and orderly.
This article relates to how we have been talking about Drews compression shorts idea in class. He would have to figure out how he’s going to get customers to buy his product and what they want. That is exactly what the article was talking about. Especially how the article said that it is good to remember what old returners customers last bought and their sizes.
